I. CITY OVERVIEW
1. Brief Introduction:
Chongqing, or "Yu" for short, is one of China's Great Historical and Cultural Cities. Throughout its history, Chongqing has been the capital of the State of Ba and the State of Daxia, as well as the provisional capital. That is why it is called "The Capital in Triplicate". It has also long been dubbed the "foggy city" and "mountain city" because of its mountains and fog. In March 1997, Chongqing officially became China's fourth municipality directly controlled by the central government, and the only one in Western China, opening a new chapter in the city's history.

Chongqing is one of four Chinese cities to be represented on the world map in the hall at the UN. It is a famous historical and cultural city, whose history stretches back more than 3,000 years. The local culture originated in the area around Chongqing, home of the ancient Ba people.

III. LOCAL TRANSPORTATION
Line 2 of Chongqing's light rail system is now in operation. It goes from Jiaochangkou to Xinshancun, with 18 stations spaced along its 19.15 km (11.9 miles) route. It charges sectional fares, with a 2-yuan minimum price and a 5-yuan maximum.
Taxis in Chongqing are painted yellow. They are mainly SX4 models, with a small number of Swift taxis. During daytime service (06:00 a.m. - 10:00 p.m.), the flag-down fare is 5 yuan for the first 3 kilometers, with a distance surcharge of 1.8 yuan per additional kilometer. During nighttime service (10:00 p.m. - 06:00 a.m.), the flag-down fare is 5.9 yuan and the distance surcharge 2.25 yuan. There is an additional BAF charge of 3 yuan.
The Jialing River and Yangtze River cableways are one of Chongqing's unique attractions. They operate not only as an airbus service connecting the two banks, but also as a "cross-river sightseeing service" offering stunning views to tourists. The ticket fare is 5 yuan (1.8 yuan if you use a public bus IC card). The Jialing River Cableway was officially shut down on March 1st, 2011. Today, only the Yangtze River Cableway is still in operation.
IV. CLIMATE FEATURES
Chongqing’s climate is humid and sub-tropical with monsoons. The city enjoys long frost-free periods and benefits from abundant rainfall. The average annual temperature is around 16-18 degrees Celsius, while the average annual precipitation is about 1,000-1,400 millimeters. The annual hours of sunshine add up to 1,000 to 1,200 hours.
Spring: spring season begins in late February to early March. During this time, the average temperature at 12-22°C is neither too cold nor too hot. Flowers blossom, and it’s a good time for travelling.
Summer: summer season begins in the middle of May. The weather turns hot and dry with plenty of sunshine and an unstable rainfall pattern. This is why Chongqing has earned the reputation of being a “furnace city”.
Autumn: autumn arrives in the middle of September and Chongqing is the first city in Southwest China in which it is felt. Autumn weather lasts about 70-80 days, about as long as spring weather. Autumn in Chongqing is cool, rainy with a lack of sunshine. From late October to the middle of November, there is a period of sunny days, which is called the “Indian Summer”.
Winter: it begins in early December. Winter in Chongqing is warm, foggy, with little snow and sunshine. The average temperature in the coldest month is 4-8°C.
V. TOURIST ATTRACTIONS
|1. Chaotianmen Port
In the early years of the Ming Dynasty, Dai Ding expanded Chongqing and built 17 gates to match the total of the 8 tri-grams and 9 halls. The largest one among these was Chaotianmen Gate. It became the place where officials received imperial decrees. On the left side of Chaotianmen lies the Jialing River. In summer, visitors can clearly see the dividing line between the green Jialing River and yellow Yangtze River. It is truly a magnificent sight to behold. These two rivers form the golden waterway of China.
Location: At the confluence of the Jialing and Yangtze rivers, Northeast of Chongqing.
|2. Liberation Monument
The Liberation Monument is a Chongqing landmark. It features a spiral staircase which travelers can ascend to get to the top of the monument. It commemorates the victory over the Japanese in WWII and the liberation of Chongqing. It is the only such memorial in China. Today, the Liberation Monument sits in the commercial center of Chongqing. It is surrounded by a multitude of stores, banks, theaters, bars, karaokes, food markets and hotels. It is a premier shopping and entertainment destination.
Location: At the crossroads of the Mingzhu, Mingquan and Zourong roads in the Yuzhong district.
|3. Cemetery of Revolutionary Martyrs at Geleshan
The Cemetery of Revolutionary Martyrs at Geleshan is located in the northwestern part of Chongqing. It was the site of the "Sino-US Institute for Cooperation in Special Technology" and of the prison of the Bureau of Investigation and Statistics of the Military Council (the giant secret service of the Kuomintang). It is also where a massacre occurred on November 27th, 1949. The cemetery and monuments were built in 1954. In 1984, it was renamed "the Cemetery of Revolutionary Martyrs" to commemorate China's martyrs and heroes.

|4. Ciqikou Ancient Town
townspeople manufactured and traded porcelain. The town has been described poetically: in Ciqikou, as "one thousand people greet each other during the day, ten thousand lamps flicker at night." Today, it is a key historical block under special protection, with 12 alleys, ancient buildings in the style of the Ming and Qing Dynasties, along with stores and shops lining the street. Its unique culture draws visitors from all over the world.

|5. Three Gorges on the Yangtze River
The Three Gorges is a famous Chinese canyon along the waters of the Yangtze River, spanning from Yichang City in Hubei Province in the East to the Chongqing Municipality in the West, with a total length of 630 km. It is constituted of the Qutang Gorge, Wu Gorge and Xiling Gorge. The Three Gorges are full of cultural and natural scenic spots: the Lesser Three Gorges in Wushan Mountain, Tiankeng Difeng and White Emperor City in Fengjie, White Crane Ridge in Fulin, the Temple of Zhangfei in Yunyang, and the Three Gorges Dam, among others.
Location: Between the city of Fengjie in Chongqing municipality and Yichang in Hubei province.
|6. Dazu Rock Carvings
The Dazu Rock Carvings are a masterpiece of China's grotto art from the Tang and Song Dynasties. They are not only rich in content but also carved with marvelous technique. The statues make skillful use of the scientific principles of mechanics and optics, and of the local landforms. They are reputed as the "Magic Pearl of Oriental Art," both at home and abroad. Because of the high artistic attainment and most exquisite skills, the Beishan, Baodingshan, Nanshan, Shizuanshan and Shimenshan Dazu Rock Carvings entered the World Cultural Heritage List on the December 1st,1999.
Location: The Dazu Rock Carvings is a general name for all the grotto art in Chongqing's Dazu County. It also includes the carvings in Tongnan County, Tongliang County and Bishan County.
